Ovechkin is the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer. He passed Wayne Gretzky's mark of 894 with his 895th goal on April 6, 2025, and in March 2026 he became only the second player, after Gretzky, to reach 1,000 NHL goals counting the playoffs. The first overall pick in 2004, he won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year, three Hart Trophies as the league's most valuable player and nine Rocket Richard Trophies as its top goal scorer. He has captained the Capitals since 2010 and led them to the 2018 Stanley Cup, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. He has spent his whole NHL career in Washington.
