What is a JSA certification, and what does it prove?

A JSA certification is an opinion, issued by James Spence Authentication, that a signature is genuine. It is not a guarantee written by the seller and it is not a receipt. It is a third party expert examining the signature against reference exemplars and putting their name to the conclusion.

It comes in two forms:

  • A COA with a numbered hologram. The standard certification, used on most items. The hologram goes on the piece, the number goes into JSA’s database.
  • A Letter of Authenticity (LOA). A full written letter, used on higher value pieces like signed guitars and jerseys. The same opinion, with more documentation behind it.

What a JSA certification proves is that a trained authenticator examined the signature, believes it is genuine, and that you can confirm that opinion yourself in about thirty seconds by entering the number on JSA’s site.

What it does not prove is provenance. It says nothing about where the item came from or who owned it before you. A certification answers “is this signature real.” Provenance answers “where has this been.” Good pieces have both. The same is true of a PSA, Beckett or ACOA certification.

How to tell if a JSA certification is real

Forged certificates are a real problem, and a sticker is easier to fake than a signature. Four checks, in order of how much they actually tell you:

  1. Enter the number in JSA’s database. Go to spenceloa.com/verify-authenticity and enter the certification number from the hologram or the letter. This is the only check that genuinely matters. If the number returns nothing, stop there.
  2. Confirm the record matches the item. A real certification number describing a different item is a stolen number on a fake sticker. What comes back should match what is in front of you: the right signer, the right kind of item.
  3. Look at the hologram itself. A genuine JSA hologram is tamper evident and is built to damage itself if it is peeled. A sticker that looks like it would lift off cleanly is a problem.
  4. Ask the seller to show you the verification. Any legitimate seller will screenshot the database result without being asked twice. A seller who gets evasive about a thirty second lookup has already told you what you need to know.

One thing that is not a check: how good the signature looks. Forgers practice. The entire reason third party authentication exists is that the naked eye is unreliable, including ours and including yours.
